I have a well-established artichoke (globe) bed which I am in the process of tidying up. They need splitting and thinning which I have never done before. Is it OK to spilt them at this time of year and what is the best and easiest way to do this? Sharp spade or something more subtle?

Every description of Japanese Maple says "small tree". Not so, mine in Glengarriff - see picture! It is a beautiful specimen but can I prune some of the lower branches to reduce some of the width to allow the azaleas either side to have a bit more space or would I be putting it at risk? Suzie
