Repotted in large terracotta planter after purchase last year, using John Innes 3 medium. Should it be fertilized and when? What type fertilizer & amount?
Purchased this tree, japanese maple - dissectum Garnet, two/three months ago and repotted it some weeks later into a larger deeper pot (see photos) in John Innes 3 and also put gravel in the base for drainage. As you will see from the attached photo, it is situated in a sheltered location which gets plenty of morning sun which, I understood to be the ideal for this species! Unfortunately, the foliage is showing signs of withering. What could be the reason?
Does commercial fertilizer (e.g. 27-2.5- 5) when used on lawns produce faster and coarser growth than that specially compounded for lawns which, generally, seems to have a much lower nitrogen content? Also, is the commercial variety depleted more quickly in the soil than the regular lawn type?
Photograph attached to assist in identification. I will send a further picture with a close up of a portion of a branch which has an appearance of 'barnacles'
