On recent TV programmes I have seen container grown plants being put directly into the soil without teasing out the roots.I always like to tease out the roots a bit to avoid pot bound plants not growing well. What do you suggest? PS: Thanks for a great web site. NF.

We have our escalonia hedge planted for the last 7-8 years and it seemed to be flurishing. In the last 6 months (approx) it seems to have developed some problems. It has got very sparse in places and does not look healthy at all. What do you think could be the problem? It acts as a boundary and would be very unpractical for us to uproot!!! We have drained our garden but it does seem to hold water. However this has not affected the hedge up to now.

Hi Gerry, a lot of your advice on growing vegetables (which I'm interested in) suggests adding Growmore or other type of fertiliser, depending on soil conditions or crop. I don't use the artificial stuff. I'd like to be more organic. I use my own garden compost. Is this good enough?

I sowed my lawn last year, 1/2 acre, one side of the lawn grew but the other didnt, the side that did not grow is always quite wet . Is there any thing i can do on a budget to get my lawn going, also is there any plants, shrubs or trees that are really good for soaking up water, my garden was a bog land so its always wet.

where do i start, i'm wanting to relawn my garden. its already part lawned with lots of weeds in, then the other part is just weeds and mud where a large shed covered, my guess was to dig up the surface of the lawn, dig up the weeds, rotivate it, add top soil to level it, then seed.. is there a faster way to do it but still keeping the cost down i.e. hired tools, do i need to dig up the old grass or can i just rotivate it,or am i going around this the wrong way Thanks for any adviceelliot render
