I have 3 young hedges, yew, hornbeam and privet and was wondering if grass clippings would be a good mulch for them.

We have been working on a rockery in our garden and to prevent soil from drifting down onto the rockery from above we thought a line of evergreen shrubs would be ideal. Could you suggest a low growing shrub which doesn't need pruning for this area. It is a place that receives full sun. We would prefer something low growing because we don't want to block the view of the upper garden which is small. Marilyn and James

Hi i think our dwarf plum tree might be diseased..we haven't had any leaves so far this year and the buds all look like there is a swelling just beneath - last week I noticed a kind of sap oozing out of them but this appears to be dried up now but the buds don't seem to be developing at all.. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Hi Gerry. I'm looking for the name of a tree that I have seen, but cannot seem to get the name of. I think it may be a type of crabapple. It's a small tree with a greyish bark, green/grey leaves and it is in flower at the moment (end of April/start of May) with a deep pink small flower - it reminds me of a smaller version of a cherry blossom with a deeper colour flower. I'd be grateful if you recognise this tree and have any information on it. Thanks.....Posie

Not a horticultural question but still a garden question. I have a patio of indian sandstone which is now quite stained with small black circular discrete marks, almost appearing like a fungus or lichen. The marks are quite random, some stones being affected and others not at all. Despite use of a proprietary patio cleaner and power hosing the stains remain. Have you any suggestions? The run-off is onto grass. Many thanks, Paula
