I wish to plant a hedge along a timber railing around the hse its almost 3/4 acre! It is exposed,and I've already lost red robin along one side 2 yrs ago I was thinking laurel but saw purple beech recently and thought thet were very nice what would you recommend?

Last Autumn I planted a few climbers e.g clematis etc they all died in the frost. I've just bought some acidic plants in Lidl today e.g rhododendren. WORRIED ABOUT LOSING THEM TOO THIS WINTER HOW CAN iPREVENT DAMAGE with the bad weather will i cut them back later on and cover them in dung from the farm yard?
