Last Feb I planted a long Carpinus Betulas hedge using bareroot plants. It is growing well but this winter a minority of the plants have lost 100% of their leaves while the other plants have retained most of theirs. They all look identical to me but could they be different varieties? I want screening in Winter so should I replace the plants which lost leaves or will they 'grow out' of this problem if I leave them alone?

I've just planted 200 bare root hornbeams. The plants seem tall (100-120) compared to the size of their small rootball. Should I prune them now to give them a better chance of survival? If yes by how much (33%, 50%)?

Hi Gerry, I have a couple of holly trees approx 2m high - they have never been pruned but I would like to restrict their height and train them into a 'hedge' shape. Should I just lop the top third off? When should I do it - Spring? Thanks , Conor

I'm establishing a laurel hedge from small plants. They have grown approx 6 foot in 4 yrs but are "leggy" at the bottom. How should I prune them? e.g. cut back to 2 foot high or just trim lower side branches? thanks, Conor
