My house is built in what used to be called locally "Bore Tree Field", named after an old tree, now dead and rotting in the hedgerow. In nearby Strangford Lough there is a Boretree Island, so I assumimg that it is a vernacular name. What species would this have been?

I have a courtyard garden with shrubs and perennials planted up against its painted fences and masonry walls. The hard surfaces are discoloured by algal and some moss growth. Will you recommend a proprietary cleaner that I might spray onto these surfaces? It must not be too deleterious to plants as it is inevitable that there will be some overspray due to the positioning of the planting.

Over the last 2 years, I've grown a lot of veg and summer bedding in containers and so have about 2 cubic metres of spent compost, made up of bought in proprietary peat based product and home made general stuff (grass, plant shreddings, green kitchen waste etc.). How best can I re-use this? Ideally, I would like to rejuvenate it in some way so that I can use it in this year's veg and summer plant containers. I don't have a lot of empty bed space to dig it in, as most of this is deeply mulched with bark.

I have grown potatoes in containers this year and, unfortunately, they have blight. I have cut off the haulms and am eating the spuds as fast as I can! What should I do with the spent compost in these containers? Can it go on my garden compost heap or to the municipal composting site?

I have potatoes in tubs all in fresh multipurpose compost with added Osmocote, religiously watered. In the last 2 weeks some leaves have yellowed between the veins and turned brown. There is no sign of any mould. Dr Hessayon's book (The Vegetable Expert) suggests it could be magnesium deficiency. If you think this is likely, I would be very grateful if you would recommend a product to boost Mg levels.

Years ago, when everyone used cylinder mowers, I was told to alternate lawnmowing directions; longitudinally one week, transversely the next. I can understand why this is desirable with a cylinder mower, but is it still needed with a rotary mower/lawn tractor on a relatively level surface? With my long, narrow lawns transverse mowing is a pain in the tractor seat!
