My Red Sentinel Crab Apple tree has a problem with its leaves since June, it has very few fruits and they are small and scabby. Its blossom was fine in the spring. I checked its ties and it's not strangled. The apple tree next to it is fine with a wonderful crop of apples. I did not summer prune it as I was afraid of doing more damage. Any ideas?

The Grisilinia hedge at the front of my house has succumbed completely to the weather (just like all the others in my area). I'm hoping to replace it with 6 or 7 shrubs. They'll need to be tough, frost-hardy, decorative if possible, and I'll need to keep them at about 4 feet high. The site is facing NNE, so it gets only the early morning sun and it can be quite windy. I'll be planting inside a 3 foot high wall. Any recommendations please?

My Mam lives in Kinsale where they have a lot of problems with whitefly. Her tomato plants (Moneymaker and Totem F1) were about 10cm high last weekend. Now, three of them have wilted off and the rest have whitefly. She has sprayed them with Bio Sprayday. Are the two problems related? Does the Sprayday go out of date (hers is last year's)? The plants are growing at the patio door of her apartment, facing southwest.

I'm planning to start a raised bed for vegetables this autumn/winter for planting next spring. I have lots of garden compost, but I'm worried about introducing slugs into the vegetable bed - they'll find it quick enough anyway. Does Nemaslug harm worms, or does it only affect slugs?

Dear Gerry, My hawthorn was grown from a cutting about 10 years ago. It lived in a large pot until 2 years ago. When I moved to Kildare I planted it in the ground. It is thriving, but it has never produced flowers, and therefore no berries.
