I've recently had some tall plum trees uprooted which has left the garden desolate. Could you suggest some low maintenance evergreen shrubs to fill the space. I was thinking of a few small fuschia along one side (how high would a dwarf one grow, if there's such a thing?). Or alternatively, how high would holly grow? I don't want to end up with anything over 6 or 7 ft. I was also thinking of a trellis with some evergreen climbers. Would jasmine and clematis yield nice flowers in Summer and stay green for the Winter? I welcome any advice,- whatever I sow has to be extremely low-maintenance as my back has given up on me.

I need to hide an ugly wall where I've made the terrible mistake of having my plum trees cut to the ground. I was no longer able to maintain the trees as regards thinning etc. Fencing is turning out to be very expensive. Huge quotes have been offered eg. Cottage fencing being very expensive and lap fencing being cheap enough (but not so nice looking). I read elsewhere on your website that Yew trees may provide screening for an ugly wall. Am I correct? How fast and how high would they grow, would they require much looking after and how many would I need to plant in an area of 30-40 ft. wide? (depending on their spread, when they reach maturity). Could you recommend any better solution than this.

I planted patio roses in my garden last year. There are lots of rose-buds on the top ready to open now. However the bottom branches are discoloured and not looking too healthy. I water regularly. Can you over-water, by chance? Is it possible that these small patio roses don't do too well when planted in the garden?

I have a hosta growing in my garden which gets eaten by slugs every year before it gets a chance to grow. Could I expect it to do well indoors if I were to dig it up and pot it?

My carnations didn't flower at all. The buds died before they opened. I had some in the shade and some of them in the sun and had no sucess with either. Any ideas what went wrong? Also my miniature rose trees had no leaves on them at all and had a few flowers for a very short time but didn't do well. Any ideas about these either?

I suspect that I forgot to prune my miniature rose bushes which are planted in open soil as there are not yet, at end of May, any buds appearing. Is the end of May a bad time to do a light pruning, or should I leave it until later in the season?
