are there any vegetable combinations that should not be planted near or beside each other? i was going to plant say a head of cabbage at the end of each drill of potatoes to maximise the space i have, rather than a patch of cabbage heads. my space is limited so i am looking at what combinations i could do.

i planted some potatoes for the first time and i think i may have not left enough room between the drills. it is roughly a foot between each drill. will this affect the quality badly? i am earthing up the drills as the shoots are now growing. i saw on gardening programme on BBC last night that grass cuttings will also do to protect them from direct sunlight. the soil is quite good but i am just worried that i will not have enough soil to keep them covered

our house was built on a field with a slope and we had to dig down the the foundations so now we have a bank at the back of the house. i am planting some vegetables this year. there is a 4ft drop from the bank down to the lawn. at the foor of the bank i planted some beech hedging last year. my problem is that the bank is eroding away, especially after the heavy frost this winter. are there plants that can bind the soil to slow this down. i cant really afford to put in a retaining wall or rows of sleepers so i was wondering if there was a more natural solution?

I planted some Griselinia at the start of december just before the bad frost. now most of the trees have no leaves and some twigs are soft. are these now dead or should i wait another month to see if any new growth comes again?
