For pre turf lawn, install sharp sand?

Prior to laying a turf lawn (as soon as the weather allows me) in order to aid drainage and levels, is it advisable mix in some “sharp sand” with the topsoil? If so, would the stuff thy sell in the builders’ section of places like B&Q be suitable? My intention is to then mix in some starter fertiliser.
